Healthcare with Love and Humanistic Care

Sustainability Purpose and Development Mission

Fu Jen Catholic University Hospital upholds the core belief of "Reverence for God and Love for Humanity; Treating Patients as Family." By integrating humanistic care into medical professionalism, the hospital actively extends its services—locally and abroad—continuously delivering healthcare resources to those most in need, accompanying and safeguarding more lives and health.

As stated in the First Letter of John 3:18: "Little children, let us not love in word or speech but in deed and in truth."

The hospital responds to this calling through concrete actions: unceasing medical services and compassionate accompaniment, building community health networks, supporting disadvantaged groups, and conducting international medical missions. Through these endeavors, love is not only a principle. Still, it is also embedded in the daily medical practices of staff, continuously bringing hope and warmth to the world while responding in action to the global challenge of sustaining health and well-being.

Community Care

Community Health Promotion Activities

Fu Jen Catholic University Hospital continues to advance community-centered health education initiatives, designing diverse health promotion activities tailored to different age groups and health issues. These include screenings for blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol; health education seminars; complementary therapy workshops and handicraft courses; muscle-strengthening exercises; and cognitive promotion activities such as board games. The goal is to help the public prevent and delay the onset of disability.

In 2024, the hospital organized more than 287 community health seminars and education activities, reaching over 9,200 participants. These initiatives have enhanced public awareness of health and disease prevention while reinforcing the hospital's role as a community health gatekeeper.

Elderly Care – Comprehensive Care for the Elderly Living Alone

Since July 2023, Fu Jen Catholic University Hospital has launched the cross-disciplinary "Comprehensive Care for the Elderly Living Alone" project, targeting elderly individuals in the community who are living alone, disadvantaged, or at high risk of health issues. By integrating resources from physicians, case managers, pharmacists, social workers, and administrative teams, the hospital established a mobile healthcare service team. Through both regular and ad-hoc home visits, the team actively monitors the living conditions of elderly individuals, assists with medical consultations, and supports medication management.

In addition, the hospital introduced the "Green Channel for Medical Access of Elderly Living Alone" initiative, establishing a priority service pathway and developing a collaborative network platform with community institutions. Partnering with accessible transportation fleets, the program offers shuttle services for seniors with mobility challenges, ensuring their right to medical access and enhancing both physical and mental well-being for elderly individuals living alone.

Dementia Care – "Memory-Living Center"

To promote the concept of early diagnosis and early treatment of dementia, Fu Jen Catholic University Hospital is committed to establishing standardized dementia care processes, aiming to achieve localized implementation and sustainable operation.

The hospital actively develops a dementia co-care network that provides services such as dementia mitigation, cognitive promotion, family support groups, caregiving skills training, and meal programs. These initiatives help slow the functional decline of individuals with dementia while equipping caregivers with essential caregiving techniques.

In 2024, the hospital supported 20 families affected by dementia and organized caregiver support groups and training programs, which collectively involved over 1,000 participants. These efforts enhanced family caregiving knowledge and communication skills, effectively delaying functional decline in elderly patients and realizing a family-centered integrated care model.

FJUH Recognition – Long-Term Care Excellence Award

Fu Jen Catholic University Hospital has actively integrated local long-term care resources, collaborating with 110 long-term care institutions to strengthen the effectiveness of community-based healthcare services. In 2024, the hospital's Department of Community Medicine received the First New Taipei City Long-Term Care Excellence Award, becoming the first regional hospital in New Taipei City to earn this honor.

This recognition highlights the hospital's leadership role in implementing policies for elderly and community healthcare, as well as advancing sustainable care initiatives.

Community Care – Tele-Music Therapy

During the pandemic, in-person outreach medical services were hindered, while the development of telemedicine technologies and supportive policies further underscored the long-standing issue of unequal healthcare resources in rural areas. In response, the medical team proposed the innovative concept of "Tele-Music Assisted Therapy," combining telehealth with non-pharmacological interventions to create a new model of rural healthcare that is both sustainable and rooted in humanistic care.

By integrating multiple resources and fostering collaborations, the initiative provides music therapy services that focus on early childhood development in rural communities and the prevention of functional decline among older people. Through telehealth platforms, geographical barriers are overcome, expanding the accessibility of healthcare resources, while in-person sessions are retained to strengthen therapeutic interaction and trust.

A systematic follow-up mechanism is also in place to monitor learning outcomes and therapeutic effectiveness, ensuring that each participant receives care tailored to their individual needs. This model demonstrates the hospital's concrete commitment to health promotion in rural areas and innovation in cross-generational care services.

In 2024, the program served 1,167 individuals, including both children in early intervention programs and elderly adults.

Spiritual Care Training – Seed Cultivation Program

To establish the hospital as an institution "with a soul," Fu Jen Catholic University Hospital has developed the Seed Cultivation Program to nurture staff across all departments with the attitudes and abilities needed to practice spiritual care—for themselves, their units, their colleagues, patients, and families. The program aims to shape an organizational culture rooted in spiritual care, thereby realizing the hospital's mission and vision of "healthcare with love."

Through the implementation of Spiritual Care Seed Teacher Training Courses and subsequent caring initiatives, the program combines theoretical learning with hands-on workshops and group discussions. It cultivates internal seed personnel with both sensitivity to spiritual needs and the practical capacity to carry out spiritual care in daily medical practice.

Spiritual Care – SNQ Certification

Fu Jen Catholic University Hospital is dedicated to fostering a healing environment that balances professionalism with compassion. With the theme "Building a Hospital with a Soul – Holistic Care through Spiritual Support," the hospital was awarded the 2024 National Quality (SNQ) Certification – Healthcare Institutions, Specialty Care Category.

International Healthcare

Guided by its Catholic faith and mission, Fu Jen Catholic University Hospital (FJUH) actively responds to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with particular focus on Goal 3: "Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages" and Goal 17: "Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development." The hospital actively participates in and supports international medical collaborations and global health assistance initiatives.

Since 2019, in partnership with the Camillian St. Mary's Hospital in Luodong, FJUH has carried love and service abroad to the Philippines, where the medical mission provided free healthcare services to nearly 1,300 residents.

The medical evangelization and mission of Catholic hospitals never cease. In July 2024, FJUH, in collaboration with faculty and students from Fu Jen Catholic University, assembled a multidisciplinary team to provide medical services and health education in rural areas of Vietnam. The team included physicians from different hospital departments, Fu Jen students, and local doctors—a total of more than 20 members. Preparations included consensus workshops, mock teaching sessions, experience sharing, and task assignments, culminating in a commissioning and blessing ceremony before departure.

The mission sites included Xa Doai Clinic, Ansheng Church, Betania Orphanage, and Lam Bich Orphanage, among others. Through these cross-border healthcare services, FJUH aims to enhance global health and well-being, reduce healthcare disparities, and improve the health outcomes and quality of life for residents. These efforts also strengthen international partnerships, fostering long-term, trust-based cooperation models that contribute to regional healthcare stability and sustainable development.
